POMPTON LAKES — The wildfire that continues to burn in the Cannonball Road area of the borough has spread to 162 acres, but the New Jersey Forest Fire Service reported it had made "significant progress" on Saturday afternoon.

West Milford’s Jennings Creek Wildfire, which straddles the New York-New Jersey border, is currently at 0% containment, the West Milford Fire Marshal’s Office said. The fire had consumed 2,500 acres and was threatening 25 structures, according to the New Jersey Forest Fire Service.

Three separate wildfires are burning throughout New Jersey, consuming over 700 acres and creating residential evacuations.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) issued an air quality alert for the New York City metro area on Sunday, warning that smoke from multiple wildfires across the state and in nearby New Jersey is elevating fine particulate matter to levels deemed "unhealthy for sensitive groups."

Wildfires were burning from one end of New Jersey to the other on Friday after one of the driest months on record, leading New York City to issue smoke warnings and forcing farmers to take steps to protect their harvests.

New York City had a weekend of mostly blue skies marred by acrid smoke and air-quality advisories after a series of brush fires, fueled by extremely dry conditions, erupted around the region. People sensitive to pollution were advised that the air quality through Sunday could be at unhealthy levels because of smoke and particulate matter.

A new wildfire was reported today at 8:02 a.m. in Los Angeles County. The wildfire has been burning on private land. Currently, there is no information on the containment of the fire and the cause of it has yet to be determined.
